Conversations with God Pt. 3

The Violent Weapon You're Not Using: Understanding Prayer in the Spirit

In a world increasingly hostile to faith, where music industry contracts explicitly forbid artists from mentioning the name of Jesus—threatening their families if they do—we face a sobering reality: there is an active spiritual war raging around us. The question isn't whether this war exists, but whether we're equipped to fight it.  Most believers underestimate the arsenal God has placed at their disposal. We pray in English, we quote scriptures we've memorized, we petition God based on what we can see and understand. But what happens when we don't know what to pray? What happens when the root of our problems lies hidden beneath the surface, while we keep addressing only the visible fruit?

A Gift Wrapped in Controversy
The gift of praying in other tongues—speaking in a spiritual language given by the Holy Spirit—has become one of Christianity's most misunderstood and controversial topics. Yet this gift appears throughout the New Testament, from the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended like a violent wind, to the apostle Paul's declaration that he thanked God for praying in tongues more than anyone else. On that first Pentecost, the arrival of the Holy Spirit wasn't a gentle whisper. It came as a roaring windstorm that shook the entire house. Tongues of fire appeared and settled on each person present—including Mary, the mother of Jesus—and they all began speaking in other languages as the Spirit gave them utterance. This wasn't a quiet, contemplative moment. It was violent, powerful, and unmistakable. Why such a dramatic entrance? Because God was introducing a weapon that would terrify the kingdom of darkness.

The Language Satan Cannot Decode
Romans 8:26-27 reveals something remarkable: "The Spirit helps us in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now he who searches the hearts knows what is in the mind of the Spirit, because he makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God." This passage unlocks a profound truth: when you pray in tongues, you're speaking directly to God in a language the enemy cannot understand, decode, or disrupt. It's a protected frequency, a private conversation between you and your Father. Demons hear the sound but cannot interpret the content. They see things shifting in your favor but have no insight into how to counterattack because they're not privy to the conversation. First Corinthians 14:2 confirms this: "For one who speaks in an unknown tongue speaks not to men but to God. For no man understands or catches his meaning because in the Holy Spirit he utters secret truths and hidden things not obvious to the understanding." What Satan cannot understand, he cannot stop.

Praying Beyond Your Intellect
Our education, experiences, and intellect can only take us so far. We often pray for what we can see—the fruit of the problem—while the root remains untouched and continues producing more negative fruit. We pray based on limited information, unaware of dangers lurking around the corner or opportunities waiting just beyond our vision. But when you pray in the Spirit, you're guaranteed to pray according to God's perfect will. You're always on target. You can never ask for the wrong thing because the Holy Spirit knows the mind of God—He knows your purpose, your destiny, where your provision is located, and which door represents your way of escape. Consider the story of a man who suddenly felt compelled to stop on his way from the barn to his house. Something was wrong with his daughter. He dropped everything and began praying in tongues at 6 a.m. He prayed until 2:30 p.m., when peace finally came. He later discovered his daughter had been struck with a deadly fever that morning, and at exactly 2:30 p.m., the fever broke and she recovered.
He had no idea what was happening, but the Holy Spirit did. And through praying in tongues, he partnered with heaven to bring about God's perfect will for his daughter's life.

The Three-Hour Breakthrough
Jesus prayed for an hour in the Garden of Gethsemane, then returned and prayed another hour with the same intensity, eventually reaching a three-hour mark. The number three in Scripture represents completeness, wholeness, and resurrection power. One woman, desperate for a breakthrough, committed to praying three hours daily for 21 days. She reported that unusual things—things that defied natural explanation—began happening in her life. Why? Because extended time in prayer moves you past the initial 15 minutes of fighting your flesh, past the 30-minute mark where heaven takes notice of your consistency, and into the hour-plus territory where God begins dropping secrets. This isn't about legalism or earning God's favor. It's about positioning yourself to receive what He's already made available.

Understanding Wisdom and Knowledge
Isaiah 33:6 tells us that "wisdom and knowledge will be the stability of your times and strength of your salvation." The word "salvation" here encompasses healing, wholeness, and deliverance. Understanding becomes the stability of your freedom. You can possess powerful equipment, but until you understand how it works, you'll never maximize its use. Imagine having an air conditioning system during 105-degree heat but not knowing how to operate it. The relief is available, but your ignorance keeps you suffering. The same applies to spiritual gifts. Many believers have the Holy Spirit but have never activated their prayer language. They're sweltering in spiritual heat, unaware that relief is literally one decision away.

A Weapon for Desperate Times
We live in an era of digital warfare, where algorithms monitor your conversations and feed you content designed to rewire your thinking away from God's truth. Monitoring spirits study your patterns, your weaknesses, your family dynamics. Without proper spiritual equipment, you'll simply yield to their influences. But when you begin to pray in tongues, you're operating in two realms simultaneously—the natural and the spiritual. You're hidden in Christ, and everything you need is found in Him. What was once covered begins to get uncovered. Provision appears. Doors open. Attacks are thwarted before they manifest.

The Call to Action
If you've been skeptical about praying in tongues, ask yourself: Why would the enemy work so hard to convince you something biblical is unnecessary or even demonic? Why would music industry executives threaten artists' families over the name of Jesus if that name held no real power? The answer is clear: this gift makes you incredibly dangerous to the kingdom of darkness. It allows you to pray error-free prayers that align perfectly with God's will. Angels respond to these prayers because they're essentially the voice of God's word being spoken through you. The question isn't whether this gift is real or available—Scripture settles that debate. The question is whether you're desperate enough for breakthrough to pursue it, whether you're willing to spend more than a few distracted minutes in prayer, whether you'll push past the initial discomfort into the place where heaven releases secrets. Your family needs you praying this way. Your children on college campuses surrounded by every ideology and influence need you interceding beyond what you can see. Your finances, your health, your destiny—all need the intervention that comes when you partner with heaven's perfect will.
The weapon is in your hands. The only question remaining is whether you'll use it.
