The Benefits of Holiness Pt. 4
Training for Reigning: The Spiritual Discipline That Changes Everything
What if the key to unlocking your spiritual destiny has been available to you all along, yet somehow remains unused? What if the power to overcome every obstacle, heal every wound, and fulfill every promise of God is already within your grasp—but you've simply never been trained to access it? The Christian life isn't meant to be lived in spiritual poverty, constant defeat, or emotional exhaustion. Yet countless believers find themselves stuck in cycles of frustration, wondering why the promises they read about in Scripture seem to work for others but not for them. The answer might be simpler than you think: it's not about having more faith—it's about spiritual training.
The Truth About Spiritual Fitness
First Peter 1:15 gives us a clear directive: "But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy." This isn't a suggestion or a nice spiritual ideal—it's a command with profound implications for how we live. But here's where it gets interesting. First Timothy 4:7-8 draws a fascinating parallel between physical and spiritual training: "Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come." Think about that for a moment. When someone commits to physical fitness, they don't just show up at the gym once and expect results. They train consistently, push through discomfort, and develop strength over time. The same principle applies spiritually—except the rewards are infinitely greater. The problem? Most believers have never been taught how to train spiritually. We've been taught to attend church, read our Bibles, and pray occasionally. But spiritual training goes deeper than surface-level religious activity.
The Deception of Information Without Application
James 1:22 cuts through one of the greatest deceptions in modern Christianity: "But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only." The Amplified version expands this beautifully: "Prove yourselves doers of the word, actively and continually obeying God's precepts, not merely listeners who hear the word but fail to internalize its meaning." Here's the uncomfortable truth: you can love God's Word, memorize Scripture, attend every church service, and still be spiritually powerless. Why? Because information without application produces an illusion. Revelation without application leads to frustration and spiritual entertainment. We've become a generation of believers who celebrate the Word but don't do it. We quote it, post it on social media, and discuss it in small groups—but we don't live it. And that's why many remain stuck in the same patterns, facing the same defeats, experiencing the same spiritual dryness year after year.
The Foundation That Cannot Be Shaken
Luke 6:46-49 presents a sobering picture: "What good is it to mouth the words 'Lord, Lord' if you don't live by my teachings?" Jesus describes two builders—one who dug deep and built on solid rock, and another who built without a foundation. When the storms came, one house stood firm while the other collapsed. The question isn't whether storms will come to your life—they will. The question is: what are you building your life upon? What materials are you using to construct your spiritual house? Stability in life comes from obedience, not from your ability to quote Scripture. The words you celebrate but don't obey will never change your life.
The Power of Spiritual Hydration
John 7:37-38 records Jesus standing and crying out: "If any man thirst, let him come unto me and let him drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water." Your physical body is approximately 78% water. Water lubricates your joints, sustains your organs, aids digestion, and even heals your body. If natural water does all of this for your natural body, imagine what spiritual living water does for your spirit.
Yet here's where many believers have been deceived. The church has become uncomfortable discussing the baptism of the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues because it might "offend" people. But the church isn't primarily for unbelievers—it's for believers who need to be equipped and empowered. First Corinthians 14:2 explains: "He that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries." When you pray in tongues, you're accessing a realm that bypasses your natural understanding. You're speaking mysteries—things hidden in God that your natural mind cannot comprehend. These mysteries include God's blueprints for your life, divine strategies for your circumstances, and supernatural solutions to natural problems. Romans 8:26 reveals why this is so crucial: "Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered." You don't know everything. You don't have all the details of every situation. People only tell you half the story. But the Holy Spirit knows all things, sees all things, and can show you things before they happen. When you pray in the Spirit, you're cooperating with the One who knows everything—and that's when Romans 8:28 activates: "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God."
The Muscle of Your Mouth
Proverbs 6:2 warns: "Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth." Life moves in the direction of your words. If you don't like where your life is going, change what you're saying. The centurion in Matthew 8 understood something profound. When Jesus offered to come to his house to heal his servant, the centurion replied, "Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed." Speak the word only. Not your complaints, not your fears, not your doubts—speak the Word only. Mark 11:23 gives us the formula: "Whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith." You will have what you say. If you say God's Word and believe it without doubting, you will have what God said you should have. Job 22:28 adds another dimension: "Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways." A decree is an unchangeable order established by God. When you speak what God has said, you're not just making positive confessions—you're releasing divine decrees that Heaven must respond to.
The Choice Before You
The reality is simple but profound: no training, no reigning. If you're not putting in spiritual work, something is working you. If you're not training, you're not walking in victory.
The question isn't whether God's promises are true—they are. The question is whether you're willing to do what it takes to experience them. Will you move beyond surface-level Christianity into the depths of spiritual discipline? Will you become a doer of the Word and not just a hearer? Will you develop the spiritual muscles necessary to reign in this life?
The power is available. The promises are real. The training program has been laid out in Scripture. All that remains is your decision to begin.
