Efrangelism Part 3
The Power of Your Words: Shaping Your Reality Through Speech
Have you ever stopped to consider the immense power contained within your words? The things we say, often carelessly or without much thought, have the potential to shape our reality in profound ways. This isn't just positive thinking – it's a spiritual principle woven into the very fabric of creation. From the beginning, we see that God created the universe through the power of His spoken word. "Let there be light," He said, and light burst forth into existence. This creative power of speech wasn't reserved for God alone. When He formed humanity, He breathed His own life into us, making us "speaking spirits" in His image.
Consider the account in Genesis where God brings all the animals to Adam to see what he would name them. Whatever Adam called each creature, that became its name and purpose. This demonstrates the authority given to humanity to shape reality through our words. But with great power comes great responsibility. Our words can bring life or death, blessing or cursing. As it says in Proverbs 18:21, "The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit." Every day, we are sowing seeds with our speech that will produce a harvest in our lives.
Science is now catching up to what Scripture has always taught about the power of words. Fascinating experiments have shown how positive and negative speech can physically alter water molecules and even affect the growth of plants. When we consider that our bodies are 70% water, we begin to see how our words might be impacting our physical health and well-being. This isn't just true on a personal level. Our words have the power to build up or tear down those around us. Proverbs 12:18 tells us, "The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing." How often have we witnessed relationships damaged or even destroyed by careless words? On the flip side, how many of us can recall a time when an encouraging word lifted our spirits and gave us strength to persevere?
Understanding this spiritual principle should radically change how we approach our speech. Instead of complaining about our circumstances or speaking negatively about ourselves and others, we can choose to align our words with God's truth. When we do this, we're not just engaging in positive self-talk – we're partnering with heaven to see God's promises manifest in our lives. Think about Abraham, the father of faith. God promised him descendants as numerous as the stars when he was old and childless. Instead of focusing on his circumstances, Abraham chose to agree with God's promise. He called himself a "father of many nations" long before Isaac was born. His words of faith paved the way for the miracle to manifest.
This principle applies to every area of our lives. Are you battling illness? Instead of constantly talking about your symptoms, try declaring, "By His stripes, I am healed!" (Isaiah 53:5). Struggling financially? Speak God's promises of provision over your life. Feeling discouraged? Remind yourself that you are more than a conqueror through Christ (Romans 8:37). It's important to note that this isn't about denial or ignoring reality. It's about choosing to agree with a higher reality – God's truth – even when our circumstances don't yet reflect it. This takes courage and often feels foolish to our natural minds. But as we persist in speaking faith-filled words, we create an atmosphere for miracles to happen.
Consider how Jesus operated in this principle. When He encountered the dead daughter of Jairus, He didn't say, "Oh, how sad. She's gone." Instead, He declared, "The child is not dead but asleep" (Mark 5:39). He spoke life into a seemingly hopeless situation, and the girl was raised. We have been given the same authority through Christ. Our words can command healing, break strongholds, and even cast out demonic influences. But we must learn to use this power wisely and intentionally.
Here are some practical steps to harness the power of your words:
1. Be mindful of your speech. Pay attention to the things you say habitually, especially about yourself and your circumstances.
2. Align your words with Scripture. Find promises in God's Word that apply to your situation and begin declaring them over your life.
3. Speak life, not death. Choose to use your words to encourage and build up, rather than tear down.
4. Command, don't ask. When facing challenges, don't beg God to act. Use your God-given authority to command circumstances to align with His will.
5. Be patient and persistent. Just as a seed takes time to grow, your words of faith may not produce instant results. Keep speaking life, even when you don't see immediate change.
6. Guard your heart. What we meditate on internally will eventually come out of our mouths. Fill your mind with God's Word and positive truths.
As you begin to harness the power of your words, you may face opposition – both internally from old thought patterns, and externally from those who don't understand this principle. Remember, you're not alone in this journey. God's Word is filled with examples of those who used their speech to partner with heaven and see the impossible become possible. Imagine a life where your words consistently create an atmosphere of faith, hope, and love. Picture the impact you could have on your family, your workplace, and your community by speaking life in every situation. This is the inheritance and authority we have as children of God.
So today, make a decision to be more intentional with your speech. Let your words be a reflection of God's truth and love. As you do, you'll find yourself walking in greater levels of victory and becoming a powerful agent of transformation in the world around you. Your words have power – use them wisely and watch as God's promises unfold in your life!
